Axial Flux Motors

An axial-flux motor is a type of motor in which the main magnetic flux in the air gap is distributed along the motor’s rotational axis; the stator and rotor typically have a disc-shaped (disc-type) structure, and electromechanical energy conversion is achieved through an axial magnetic field.

Industry Applications

 New Energy Vehicles
 Humanoid Robots
 Low-Altitude Aircraft
 CNC Machine Tools
 Construction and Agricultural Machinery
 Ships
 Energy-Efficient Equipment

Axial-flux motors feature an extremely short magnetic flux path: the magnetic field travels directly along the axial direction through the air gap, reaching from one pole of the rotor to the opposite pole of the stator. Unlike traditional radial motors, it does not need to pass through complex magnetic circuits such as stator teeth or the stator yoke. This significantly reduces magnetic resistance and achieves a qualitative improvement in magnetic field utilization, thereby optimizing the motor’s energy conversion efficiency at its core. The design features the following characteristics:

1. Ultra-thin and flat: With a disc-shaped structure, the axial dimensions are only 1/3 to 1/2 those of radial motors, making it suitable for applications with limited axial space
2. Ultra-high torque density: Torque density is 30%–60% higher than that of radial motors of the same volume, providing strong high-torque output capability
3. High efficiency: Short magnetic flux path and low iron loss result in a significant efficiency advantage at high speeds
4. Axial force balance: The dual-rotor structure balances axial magnetic attraction, reducing bearing loads
5. Superior heat dissipation: The large exposed surface area of the stator windings provides better heat dissipation than radial motors
6. Explosion-proof safety: A fully sealed explosion-proof enclosure combined with a shaft extension seal meets Ex d IIC T4 requirements

Axial Flux Motors FAQ

  • Q Axial Flux Motors FAQ

A 1.How thin can the axial thickness of an axial flux motor be? What are the maximum and minimum outer diameters?

Wheatstone provides customers with the best solutions within the applicable range.

2.How do axial flux motors dissipate heat, and are they prone to overheating?
Axial flux motors do face significant thermal management challenges, primarily due to their compact, high-power-density design. However, they are not inherently prone to overheating; rather, their ability to dissipate heat depends entirely on the cooling system integrated into the design. A wide range of innovative cooling strategies—from advanced liquid systems to passive heat pipes—are employed to effectively manage heat and ensure reliable operation

3.What is the total weight of the Axial Flux Motors? Does it meet the weight reduction requirements?
Axial flux motors are celebrated for their exceptional power-to-weight ratios, and the data strongly confirms that they significantly outperform conventional motors in weight reduction. The total weight varies greatly by application, but the technology consistently demonstrates a massive weight advantage.
