The WHEATSTONE UnderWater Motors. Oil-filled, pressure-compensated motors: This is a special design intended for high-pressure environments such as the deep sea. Based on a conventional oil-filled structure, it incorporates an automatic pressure-balancing device (such as a piston-type compensator). This device ensures that the oil pressure inside the motor remains slightly higher than the external water pressure (for example, maintaining a positive pressure differential of 0.05 MPa), thereby effectively preventing seawater intrusion and balancing internal and external pressures to prevent the motor housing from being crushed. Motors of this type are suitable for extremely deep underwater environments.
Pressure-Adaptive Balancing
Through a pressure compensator, the oil pressure inside the motor automatically adjusts to changes in external water pressure, maintaining dynamic balance at all times. This allows the motor housing to withstand deep-sea pressures without requiring an extremely thick and heavy design, which is key to enabling full-ocean-depth applications (such as 7,000-meter and 10,000-meter classes).
● Extremely high environmental reliability:
Since the internal oil pressure is always slightly higher than the external water pressure, even if there is slight wear at the seals, it is oil—not water—that leaks. This fundamentally eliminates the risk of seawater intrusion causing motor short circuits or corrosion, significantly extending the operational life under harsh conditions such as deep-sea environments and those containing silt and sand.
Excellent Insulation and Heat Dissipation:
The internal insulating oil also serves as a cooling medium. It comes into direct contact with the windings, and through the flow of the oil (possibly aided by an internal circulation pump), it facilitates efficient heat exchange, transferring heat to the casing, where it is carried away by the external seawater. The oil’s dielectric strength is far higher than that of water, ensuring electrical safety under high voltage.
