he WHEATSTONE UnderWater Motors. An oil-filled submersible motor is a specialized motor filled with insulating oil to withstand high pressures in the deep sea and provide effective cooling and lubrication; it serves as the core power equipment for underwater operations.
Internal oil filling and pressure equalisation:
The motor is filled with mineral oil (or transformer oil) with high insulating and lubricating properties, which serves to cool and lubricate the motor. Crucially, it is fitted with a pressure compensator that ensures the internal oil pressure remains slightly higher than the external water pressure (for example, maintaining a positive pressure differential of 0.05 MPa), thereby effectively preventing seawater ingress.
Sealing system:
A dual-seal design is employed, with mechanical seals used at dynamic sealing points such as the shaft extension end, whilst oil-resistant rubber ‘O’-rings are used at static sealing points such as the housing joint surfaces; together, these prevent oil leakage and the ingress of external water.
Auxiliary systems:
Some advanced designs also incorporate an automatic water-removal system which, in the event of accidental seawater ingress, utilises the pressure differential generated by the rotor’s rotation to drive the circulation of hydraulic fluid and purify it via a water-removal unit (such as a desiccant tank), thereby extending maintenance intervals. At the same time, various sensors—including those for temperature and water ingress—are installed within the motor to enable real-time monitoring and protection.
