At 3 AM beside a hot rolling mill finishing train, the infrared thermometer read 95℃ on the motor housing. The maintenance technician noted in the log: “#17 roll table motor, bearing noise, scheduled for replacement next week.” Behind this entry is another soldier about to fall on a production line that rolls millions of tonnes of hot strip steel annually.

Hot strip steel exits the roughing mill at temperatures of 1050℃ to 1200℃. After repeated passes through the finishing mill, the strip enters the run-out table for laminar cooling, dropping from approximately 900℃ to 600℃. Roll table motors are installed just tens of centimetres from these thousand-degree slabs, enduring the triple assault of thermal radiation, severe temperature variations, and heavy impact loads.

The Three Mountains on Hot Rolling Mill Roll Table Motors

Mountain 1: Thermal Radiation – Motor Housing Temperatures Easily Exceed 90℃

On hot rolling mill production lines, roll table motors remain in a constant high-temperature state. Production rhythm is fast, and the motors are positioned close to the finished steel, continuously exposed to heat. Standard motors are designed for a reference ambient temperature of just 40℃. In the thermal radiation environment of hot rolling mill roll tables, even with winding temperature rise controlled within 80K, After superposition, the ambient temperature can still easily exceed the allowable upper limit of the insulation material. A Class H (180℃) motor operating over long periods in an ambient temperature above 90℃ may have winding temperatures approaching 170℃. Following the “10℃ Rule” – for every 8-10℃ increase above rated temperature rise, insulation life halves – the actual service life of such a motor is significantly reduced.

Mountain 2: Severe Temperature Variations – The Fatigue Assault of Thermal Cycling

The operating cycle of hot rolling mill roll tables is measured in seconds. As a one-tonne slab passes over the roll table, the motor completes a full-load start and stop within seconds; after the slab passes, the roll table enters a brief “idle waiting period.” Thousands of start-stop-start temperature cycles per day impose sustained high-intensity fatigue loading on motor insulation and bearings. The temperature changes during slab transfer cause thermal expansion that can seize bearings at the roller ends. This “chronic damage” is far more difficult to detect than sustained high temperature, yet equally fatal – repeated thermal expansion and contraction cause micro-cracks in insulation layers, abnormal bearing clearance, and accelerated grease degradation.

Mountain 3: Heavy Impact Loads – Starting Torque Must Reach 1.8× Rated or Above

Roll tables require frequent start-stop operation (e.g., material loading/unloading, segmented conveying), demanding high starting torque motors (starting torque multiple ≥1.8× rated torque) to avoid “stalling” during start-up; for high impact loads (such as hot slab conveying in metallurgy), wound-rotor induction motors or variable frequency drive motors may be selected. On hot rolling mill lines, each slab weighs from several tonnes to tens of tonnes – roll table motors must deliver instantaneous high torque during full-load starts. One hot rolling mill finishing GF17 roll table has 19 motors rated at 11kW each, with the variable frequency drive offering an overload capacity of 136% for 1 minute. If motor overload capacity is insufficient, the result is frequent tripping disrupting production rhythm, or motor burnout causing unplanned line shutdown – with losses on a hot rolling line calculated in tens of thousands of RMB per minute.

Bearings are the first components to fail in hot rolling mill roll table motors. Above 100℃, conventional greases undergo rapid base oil oxidation and evaporation, with thickener hardening and carbonisation.
