From subsea thrusters and deepwell pumps to seawater motors and underwater robotic gimbals, each application imposes unique demands on motor design. Depth rating, power density, sealing method, media type, and installation space all play critical roles. Jiangsu Wheatstone has developed a comprehensive underwater motor portfolio covering oilfilled, drysealed, and pressurecompensated technologies, offering “oneenvironment, onesolution” customisation for global clients.
This article walks through the six most critical questions in underwater motor selection and presents Wheatstone’s technical responses with realworld case studies.
Underwater Thrusters (ROV, AUV, subsea vehicles) demand compact size, high power density, and fast response. Wheatstone offers DC brushless and servo options, with hydrodynamic propeller interfaces. Thrust range: 5 kgf to 500 kgf.
DeepWell Pumps (mine drainage, geothermal extraction, water supply) require slim profiles, high pressure tolerance, and long life. Wheatstone oilfilled or canned motors are available with outer diameters as small as 96 mm, fitting 612 inch casings.
Seawater Motors (offshore platforms, seawater cooling, desalination highpressure pumps) need saltspray resistance and antifouling protection. Wheatstone standardises on 316L stainless steel housings, titanium fasteners, and optional copper alloy shielding against marine growth.
Robotic Gimbals (underwater manipulators, camera gimbals, scanning sonars) require compact size, high positioning accuracy, and smooth lowspeed operation. Wheatstone lowvoltage DC servo motors with highresolution encoders achieve ±0.01° positioning accuracy.
Case Study: A deepsea research ROV used Wheatstone oilfilled brushless thrusters rated for 3,000 meters depth, delivering 120 kgf thrust. The motors ran for 2,000 hours without failure.

Every 10 meters of water depth adds approximately 1 atmosphere (0.1 MPa) of pressure. Different depth ranges demand vastly different sealing structures and material strengths.
Shallow water (≤100 m): Conventional mechanical seals plus Orings, IP68 rated.
Medium water (1001,000 m): Doubleface mechanical seals or magnetic coupling drives; thicker housing walls.
Deep water (1,0003,000 m): Pressurecompensated oilfilled design (internal oil pressure balances external water pressure). Titanium or highstrength stainless steel housings.
Ultradeep water (3,0008,000 m): Fully sealed pressurebalanced chambers with highinsulation oil, glasssintered hermetic terminals, and FEAoptimised housings; 1.5× working pressure hydrostatic testing.
Wheatstone Advantage: Four depth grades: 500 m, 3,000 m, 6,000 m, and 8,000 m. The WDUP series is designed for hadalzone (8,000 m) scientific research, with isobaric sealing and glasssintered terminals, accumulating over 4,000 operational hours.
Underwater equipment space is limited, especially for ROVs, AUVs, and gimbals. Wheatstone offers custom diameters from 20 mm to 400 mm, power from 50 W to 200 kW.
Micro (OD 2050 mm): 10200 W – underwater gimbals, micro thrusters, manipulator finger joints.
Small (OD 50100 mm): 200 W5 kW – small ROV thrusters, deepwell pumps.
Medium (OD 100200 mm): 550 kW – medium AUVs, hydraulic pump units for deepsea mining vehicles.
Large (OD 200400 mm): 50200 kW – large subsea work systems, auxiliary thrusters for deepsea drilling platforms.
Case Study: A deepsea mining vehicle used a custom Wheatstone frameless underwater motor (OD 280 mm, 75 kW) directly driving a hydraulic pump at 6,000 meters depth, accumulating over 3,000 operating hours.
Three main sealing technologies exist:
Fully DrySealed: Internal cavity remains dry; water excluded by mechanical seals and Orings. Suitable for shallow water, intermittent duty, easy maintenance. Simple but seal failure risk at depth.
OilFilled (PressureCompensated): Internal cavity filled with insulating oil (transformer or hydraulic oil), connected to external water via bladder or piston for pressure balance. Housing not pressuredifferentialstressed – suitable for deep water. Minor efficiency penalty (typically <85%) due to oil viscosity drag.
WaterFilled: Internal cavity filled with clean water; windings use waterproof insulation; rotor rotates in water. Simple and lowcost but demands highquality insulation and corrosion protection; lower efficiency.
Wheatstone Recommendation: Oilfilled + pressure compensation for depths >300 m; standard for depths >500 m; fully sealed pressurebalanced chambers for ultradeep water.
Freshwater: 316L stainless steel or properly coated carbon steel; NBR or FKM seals.
Seawater: 316L stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, or titanium; A480 stainless steel fasteners; FKM or FFKM seals; heavyduty anticorrosion coatings.
Wastewater: Additional abrasive wear resistance. Wheatstone uses hard alloy coated shafts, labyrinth seals plus double lip seals to prevent sediment ingress.
Case Study: A coastal nuclear power plant’s seawater cooling pump motor, with Wheatstone 316L stainless steel housing, titanium fasteners, and FKM seals, operated for 5 years in sandy seawater. Inspection showed dry interior and no corrosion.
Pressure compensator integration affects overall motor dimensions:
Builtin end cap: Bladder or piston integrated into the motor rear end cap. Compact, ideal for spacelimited ROVs and AUVs. Limited compensation volume – typically ≤2,000 m.
External compensator: Separate unit connected by hose. Larger compensation volume, suitable for depths up to 8,000 m, easier maintenance. Requires additional space.
Wheatstone Capability: Both configurations available. For extremely confined spaces, compensators can be integrated into the motor housing itself (“hidden” balancing).
